You’re gonna do what??
Just eat food waste for one month…
But you can’t eat that, it’s rubbish.
Exactly! Food waste is totally rubbish and we want to do something about it!
Can you believe that an incredible 1/3 of food for human consumption is wasted? If food waste was a country it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases. Waste in just the US is more than would be needed to feed all the malnourished people in the whole world.
It’s serious stuff.
So what are we gonna do?
For the next month we will be trying to survive entirely on surplus food. We will be getting creative with ingredients and recipes, (Marrow ‘pasta’, with marrow sauce and toasted marrow seeds anyone?!) documenting our experiences here on the blog and fundraising for three charities which are tackling food waste.
Feedback is working to put an end to foodwaste globally and campaigns for a more sustainable model of food production. They also organise mass participation feasts ‘Feeding the 5000’ to raise awareness of the issue.
Fareshare redistributes surplus food from supermarkets and food business and gives it to charity and community groups changing peoples lives with food. Last year they rescued enough food to create 36.7million meals! Wow!
Foodcycle cooks delicious meals with surplus food that would otherwise be wasted, providing support and community for lonely and hungry people. We both volunteer for Foodcycle and know firsthand what a positive impact they make.
We have an ambitious target of raising £1000 and we know this challenge isn’t gonna be easy. We would love your support!
Will we survive the first week, die of hunger or excessive marrow consumption? Dum dum dum…
Tune in next time to find out!
