Butternut Squash FAQs
Harvest time for butternut squash is typically in the fall/autumn months. In the UK, September-November is peak butternut squash season.
Whole and unblemished butternut squashes can be stored in a cool, dark place, such as a shed or garage, for up to 3 months.
Cut butternut squash can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen in airtight containers for up to 6 months.
Butternut squash skin is edible, but it can be tough to eat. Butternut is a type of winter squash and so it can have quite thick skin. Therefore, peeling before cooking or removing the skin after roasting is often preferable.
We often use this rule of thumb to decide whether we should peel a butternut squash: If you can pierce the skin of the squash with your fingernail without too much effort, it's soft enough to leave it on.
Yes, the seeds of butternut squash are edible and nutritious. They can be saved and roasted like pumpkin seeds, although they may need less cooking time. The seeds have a shell or hull which is also edible, but this can be discarded to reveal the kernel or pepita inside.
