Still looking for more ideas on how to use spinach? These are two of our favourite ways to use up spinach in our kitchen:
- Use spinach as a subsitute for basil in our vegan pesto. Use half basil leaves and half spinach for variety.
- Add a handful of fresh spinach leaves into a curry towards the end of cooking. This works great in our Thai Red Curry with Sweet Potato.
- Blend spinach into your healthy morning smoothie for an extra green kick to start the day.
Spinach FAQs
Spinach is available year round. In the UK, the peak season for fresh spinach is May to October.
Fresh spinach should be stored in the fridge. To help it stay fresher for longer you can gently wrap dry spinach leaves in a paper towel (this helps to absorb excess moisture, which causes it to go off quicker). Put your wrapped spinach in a sealed bag or container and store in the crisper or vegetable drawer for up to 1 week.
Yes, there are several ways to freeze spinach.
To freeze whole fresh spinach leaves, wash them very well and dry thoroughly. Pack the leaves into an airtight bag and squeeze out the excess air. Freeze for up to 6 months.
To reduce the risk of freezer burn and increase their freezing time, you can blanch spinach before freezing. To blanch, bring a large pan of water to the boil, add your washed spinach and cook for 2 minutes. Remove the spinach and plunge into ice water to chill. Drain the chilled spinach and squeeze out excess moisture, before transferring into freezer containers and freezing.
To freeze spinach for smoothies, place washed spinach leaves in a blender with a little bit of water and blend until smooth. Pour the spinach puree into ice cube trays, freeze until solid and transfer the cubes into freezer containers for longer storage.
